Jan Davidsz. de Heem was born in Utrecht and probably learned the painting from the flower still life painter Balthasar van der Ast. His father died in 1612, his mother remarried, and the family then moved to Leiden. There De Heem married; three children would emerge from the marriage, including Janen Cornelis de Heem.
