Avercamp was one of the first painters of the Northern Netherlands to specialize in a more or less realistic depiction of the landscape. He often first made a number of studies in the open air, to further develop them in his studio. He specialized in winter scenes, later popularly known as "Winterjes". Its popularity was in keeping with the times, falling in the so-called Little Ice Age, when winters were often extremely cold. As a bread painter, Avercamp made more than a hundred of these works in his lifetime, as well as countless drawings, several of which are in the possession of the Rijksmuseum.
